An Edmonton Whisky Guide: Where to Start
Whisky can feel like a members-only club with its own vocabulary. It is not. Strip away the jargon and there are really just a few families, a few flavours, and a simple question: what do you actually like? Here is a guide that respects your time.
The three families you need to know
Canadian rye
Smooth, easy, and built for mixing or sipping neat. Crown Royal and Canadian Club are the household names for a reason — they are forgiving and reliable. If you are new to whisky or building a bar cart, start here.
Bourbon
American, sweeter, with notes of vanilla and caramel from the charred-oak barrels. Jack Daniel's (technically Tennessee whiskey), Jim Beam and Maker's Mark are the gateway bottles. Great in an old fashioned, great on the rocks.
Scotch
The widest range of the three. Blended Scotch like Johnnie Walker is approachable; single malts like Glenfiddich and Glenlivet lean more complex. If you have heard the word "peaty," that is the smoky, campfire style — polarizing, and worth trying before you buy a full bottle of it.
Neat, rocks, or mixed?
There is no wrong answer, despite what a purist might tell you. Neat lets you taste everything. A single large ice cube opens it up and takes the edge off. And a good rye in a highball with ginger ale is a perfectly respectable way to spend an evening. Drink it the way you enjoy it.
Building a starter shelf
- One easy rye for mixing and casual pours.
- One bourbon for sweetness and cocktails.
- One blended Scotch for when you want something a little more serious.
That covers most occasions and most guests. You can go deeper later — single malts are a rabbit hole worth falling into eventually.
