A Beginner's Guide to Edmonton Craft Beer
Edmonton's craft beer scene has exploded over the past decade, which is great news for your taste buds and slightly overwhelming if you do not know a saison from a stout. Here is a no-snobbery guide to figuring out what you actually like.
Start with what you know
If you have mostly had domestic lagers, you already have a reference point. Craft beer is not a different planet — it is the same idea with more flavour and variety. Use your existing taste as the starting line, not a thing to apologize for.
The main styles, decoded
Lager & Pilsner
Crisp, clean, refreshing. The easiest bridge from domestic beer. A craft pilsner is a great first step up.
Pale Ale & IPA
Hop-forward and aromatic. Pale ales are moderately bitter and friendly; IPAs crank the hops up. If you find a regular IPA too intense, look for a "session" or "hazy" IPA — softer and more approachable.
Wheat & Witbier
Light, often a little citrusy or spiced. Easy-drinking and a good warm-weather pick.
Stout & Porter
Dark, rich, with coffee and chocolate notes. Heavier, and surprisingly easy to like even if "dark beer" sounds intimidating.
Sour
Tart and tangy — the wild card. Polarizing, but worth one try to know where you stand.
How to explore without overcommitting
Buy singles, not cases, while you are figuring out your palate. A mixed handful of different styles teaches you more than six of the same. Once you find your lane, then you stock up.
